  • In 2022, the Department of Psychology of the University of Maryland introduced new principles and criteria in their periodic merit reviews as well as in evaluations of candidates for associate and full professorship.
  • The principles reflect changes in the assessment approaches, particularly with respect to valuing diversity of academic activities and achievements. Scholars are to be evaluated on their contributions to research, teaching and service, with a recognition that they can take various legitimate forms. Candidates for full professorships are given most flexibility in relative weights of these three pillars, but substantial leadership contributions are expected of them.
  • The policies include criteria promoting adherence to high standards for research integrity, reproducibility, and equity and inclusion.
  • Overall, the assessments are meant to adhere to standards of responsible use of indicators in line with DORA commitments. Moreover, a use of narrative summaries and annotations of CVs and research outputs is encouraged to better contextualize achievements.
