Summary of Intervention(s) | • In February 2020, Staffordshire University released a statement on the Responsible Uses of Research Metrics.
• The principles replicate and seek to build on those outlined in the Leiden Manifesto.
• Elaborating on calls for research evaluations to consider an individual’s career holistically, the principles state that “length of career, career stage, career breaks, part-time working and protected characteristics may impact upon an individual’s research productivity and associated research metrics.” Responsible uses of metrics thus entails use of metrics in the context of an individual’s wider portfolio of accomplishments and activities.
• The Principles also commits the Research Director of the University to periodically review the uses of metrics in the institution every two years to check for appropriateness.
