• In 2016 the London School of Economics (LSE) published a statement on its commitment to principles of responsible use of citation metrics.
• Its 12 principles were derived from the Leiden Manifesto and DORA, but the LSE translated high-level principles from these sources into the context of social sciences.
• For example, the principles cite the importance of locally relevant research from different regions of the world and highlight the propensity of many non-English language journals to fall outside the coverage of major citation databases and to not have impact factors.
• The research outputs assessed in hiring, tenure and promotion decisions should reach beyond simply research publications and include datasets and software.
