Summary of Intervention(s) | • After signing DORA in 2017, Newcastle University produced a Policy Statement and associated guidance to support responsible uses of research metrics and responsible research assessment. The principles of DORA were also included in the University’s Code of Good Practice in Research.
• The Policy Statement is intended to inform all manner of research assessments from procedures for hiring individual candidates to departmental level evaluations such as the Research Excellence Framework.
• Adapted from the Leiden Manifesto and Metric Tide Report, the University’s Statement includes principles such as metrics should: support (not replace) expert judgement, be based on reliable and high quality data, and be transparent about the data sources and assumptions made to take decisions.
• In future the University will ensure that training on responsible uses of research metrics will be made available to staff and the Policy Statement will be periodically reviewed.
