  • Since 2022, the Department of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College has been employing partly anonymized hiring procedures in their new faculty search in order to mitigate unconscious biases that might compromise fair assessments of applicants.
  • Applicants are evaluated in two stages, for the first of which they are requested to submit an anonymized cover letter, detailing their interest in the organization, teaching experience and strengths, how their research/professional background will contribute to the education of students, their professional development plans as well as experiences and future plans for promoting equity and inclusion at HMC.
  • Only the anonymized cover letter is used in the initial screening process. Other non-anonymized documents are reviewed only for preselected candidates.
  • HMC underscores that anonymization does not entail obscuring the specific engineering content of the applicants’ work and plans. They insist instead on omission of names of people (applicants’ and their colleagues’), institutions, and journals.
