The Global Research Council (GRC) Responsible Research Assessment (RRA) working group, was established in 2021 to support the promotion and implementation of RRA practices in the international research and innovation system through the development of a collective understanding of RRA, and the sharing of guidance and best practices between research funding agencies worldwide. With a clear emphasis on transitioning from rhetoric to action, the group operates within the GRC with participant organizations from around the globe, engaging in dialogue during regional and annual meetings. The group is governed by a Secretariat, with support from the United Kingdom Research and Innovation, and is co-chaired by an organization from the Global South; King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, and one from the Global North; Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
The development of the GRC Responsible Research Assessment (RRA) Action Plan further solidifies the group’s commitment to promoting and implementing RRA principles, aiming to foster a diverse and inclusive research culture on an international scale.
In 2024, the GRC RRA working group published Dimensions of Responsible Research Assessment. This is a new framework that includes 11 dimensions to articulate funders’ vision of RRA and to frame future discussions. This report “can be used by funding agencies to understand how to embed principles of responsible research assessment and assessment reform.”
