Meeting

Celebrate DORA’s 12th birthday with the launch of guide for research performing organizations

May 15-16, 2025

Image with the time and dates of the launch events.

What are these meetings about?

  • DORA is launching “A Practical Guide to Implementing Responsible Research Assessment at Research Performing Organizations”
  • The Guide is targeted to help staff at research performing organizations to plan for and take action in implementing responsible research assessment. It is framed to provide responses to one of the most common questions the DORA team gets asked: ‘How do I get started?’.

  • The Guide includes examples, links to resources, and practical tips to help organizations navigate the challenges and identify the potential influences that can help them make the changes they want.

What will be discussed?

  • In three online panel sessions, DORA’s Chairs will introduce the guide, and guest speakers will discuss it in light of the specific contributions the guide can make to their environments.

What do we hope to achieve?

  • The main objectives of this series of events are to provide practical guidance and resources for implementing RRA reform and strategy, highlight the benefits of RRA for improving research quality and impact in different countries, and to encourage the use of the newly developed guide.
  • As expected outcomes, we hope to enhance engagement and commitment from various stakeholders towards adopting and promoting responsible research assessment practices at research performing organizations.

How can I participate now?

  • Everyone across all academic disciplines is welcome to engage online before, during, and after the meeting.
  • To cater for our global community, you can choose to join us live for any of three online sessions:

A Practical Guide for Research Performing Organizations

Over the last decade DORA has amassed loads of evidence around the challenges and opportunities that research assessment reform creates. The Guide provided us the opportunity to reflect and bring together what we have learned and to share what know can be important influences and activities to facilitate action and reform.

Addressing and reforming often entrenched practices of research assessment can be hard, but we hope that the Guide provides practical advice and inspires individuals and organization to take steps – or a leap! – to more holistic approaches to research and researcher assessment.

We have learned how important it is to understand the social and cultural underpinnings to research assessment, and why they might vary across disciplines and across countries; one approach to research assessment certainly does not fit all. The Guide is intended to be an inspirational tool, one we hope it is owned by the community.

In the meetings, DORA Chair’s will introduce the newly developed guide on RRA; highlight key features and potential benefits; and explain the expected outcomes of using it. Then, speakers will explore topics including the different landscapes they are situated in; share examples of success stories in their countries; and explore how the Guide can help.

We are curious, through these and further events throughout the year, to understand and discuss how the Guide can be used in different environments. We hope you will join us in these conversations.

The Guide is part of the suite of resources produced under Project TARA, supported by Arcadia, a family charitable foundation that helps people to record cultural heritage, to conserve and restore nature, and to promote open access to knowledge, whom we thank.

We look forward to seeing you at the events!

We are confirming speakers and will share them soon!
